How to Determine If You are Ready to Start a Business

A lot of people go into business for themselves without a lot of thought and this is one of the major reasons why most new businesses fail within five years.

Creating a business is a lot like creating a garden. It can be a lot of fun but it also will take up a lot of time and energy and you never know what the harvest will be. You have to show up, be present and vigilant to succeed.

Please do something that you enjoy to do. The ideal business to start is one that you are good at (suits your strengths and spiritual gifts); that is your passion and that you can pay your bills with.

Know that not everyone is meant to own and operate a business. People who like a stable work life and do not enjoy the ebbs and flows of money may find that owning a business drives them nuts. You need to have a lot of discipline and good boundaries especially if you work out of your home.

Some questions I asked myself years ago when I formed my healing practice were:

What Are YOUR Strengths and Spiritual Gifts?

What Ignites Your Passion?

Can You Pay Your Bills While Doing What You Love to Do?

Are You Able to Hold On to Your Current Job While You Transition to a New Field?

How Good Are You at Business?

How Good Are You at Marketing and Networking?

Who Would You Like to Help?

How Would You Like to Help Them?

Would You Still Do This if You Won a Million Dollars in the Lottery?

Do You Have a Web Site Set Up or Business Cards?

Lady GaGa Should Put the Beef into Her Songs Rather than into Her Wardrobe!

Years later I still remember the slogan “Where is the Beef” more than the actual details of the presidential election it was used in (of course this slogan began as an advertisement for Wendy’s).

As I was listening to several of Lady GaGa’s new songs that I had ordered, a lot of the songs took fooorrrreeeevvveeerrr to get to the good part. I don’t understand why she couldn’t just cut the song short by a minute and just give us the good stuff. I mean people buy songs individually now so she doesn’t have to worry about filling up an album with meaningless noise.

And some of the songs raised issues for me around authenticity. The controversy around Born in the USA being a Madonna ripoff is one thing but the most disturbing disconnect with me is that one of Lady GaGa’s new songs sounds like a Country Western one and she is SOOOOOOOOOOO not Country/Western. And it was very weird to hear her sing “Ave Maria.”

I also was a tad irritated with her releasing Judas at the start of one of the holiest weeks for Christians. Why stir up people if you do not have to. Why can’t people just play nicely with each other.  I do not feel that mixing up dance music and religion is ever a particularly good thing.

I was examining why this bothered me so much what I discovered is that it came back to my core principle of Honoring My Time and Energy. We only have so much time so we should all aim at filling the time we have with the good stuff  rather than useless filler.

I usually read over one book a day and have done so since I was twelve years old. I feel that many of the books I read around healing, business, spiritual growth, etc. could easily be condensed into a book half the size of the published one.  It is very irritating because I value my time and energy and would prefer to read two books in that same time frame as one book crammed to the brim and overflowing with filler.

I think partly that a lot of publishers and writers, in the United States, at least, feel that more is better and that the longer the book the more you can charge for it.  When I am looking for books on a topic at a book store, I often gravitate toward the smaller ones because I often find that smaller books are more densely packed with the content I need than larger ones.

One of the things I love about Amazon is their ratings system saves me hours of research time. When I order books on Amazon I focus on the number of reviews and the rating. I only look seriously at books with over 50 reviews (because I think smaller numbers are often author driven) and ratings over 4 stars.

So Amazon honors my time and energy and enhances my personal productivity and I reward them with lots of business. He he he I do feel obliged to confess that I own stock in Amazon too to keep the FTC happy.

Generally I prefer to do business with people who honor my time and energy by providing high quality services and content. And I feel that companies that do this like Amazon will thrive whereas people who do not do this will flounder. The Internet rewards people who do this and brutally punishes those who do not.

And yes as much as the divine Lady GaGa irritated me with her recent album if she reverts back to creating FABULOUS songs like Monster, I will continue to buy them.
